Did Tavis Loose His Mind Or Just Go Crazy?

Special thanks to gcmwatch, I was able to secure a longer version of the interview.  Update 6/4/2010: See Tavis's defence below. Special thanks to Paul.

???WHAT???

Some things are just so unbelievable. This has to be a joke...right?
First Al Sharpton...now this!

Blessed!

Here’s Smiley’s Statement

“Since some members of the public have responded to excerpts from my conversation with the author Ayaan Hirsi Ali, I would like to clarify my point of view and the context in which that conversation took place."

“Ms. Hirsi Ali and I were talking about violence perpetrated in the name of religion or by people who claim to be religious. We agreed that there is extremism in Christianity just as there is in Islam and other faiths. We agreed that people have always found ways to use religion to justify heinous acts. Where we disagreed was that followers of any one religion are predisposed to violence. Unfortunately, history has shown us that believers of all stripes have been misguided.
“As a follower of that first-century Palestinian Jew named Jesus, I abhor violence in the name of religion. It is intolerable under any circumstances. I have always been very open about being a Christian and, indeed, for every program of my career, on both television and radio, I have always signed off with the biblical admonition to ‘keep the faith.’

“I have faith that the American public will continue to support diversity, pluralism, and tolerance, rather than finding artificial ways to divide us.”

  1. So, Tavis, the Columbine killers were "Christians"? His statement has no factual mooring in the slightest.

The statement is so ludicrous, its stunning. Its like saying there are no black people in Atlanta, Georgia.

    What a complete nutcase.

The big surprise is that no black Christian leader of any stature has refuted this brazen lie.

Too busy planning the next prosperity conference.

As to your question, the answer is both. I always considered him as some sort of hybrid weirdo with a microphone so thankfully Tavis Smiley's words have rarely held any significance to me.

  2. Elder,

This nut says it happens "everday" in America where some Christian blows things up...He's an idiot!

I had some regard for Tavis. I bought one of his books about his personal story, and it was pretty good, but it seems that he's just snapped...He has no underpinnings for his argument...

Columbine was about killing Christians and the guys that did it were not Chtristians. they said they were gods themselves.

I don't know oif any post office killing where God's name was invoked and a Tim mcVey was inspired by dedication and alligience to the state and politics. He was an political idolater not a Christian...

Tavis is stupid and highly unreasonable. He tried to explain away his comments regarding Sharpton not coming to his conference, going so far as to call his show and redo his version of events, but stuff like this is simply dumb and dumber.

    Pastor Burnett and Gcmwatch,

Tavis Smiley is showing his true colors.

Tavis Smiley has been indoctrinated by Louis Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. Every major function has held in the past, what 5 to 7 years...Farrakhan was always present to be able to give a "word" from "Allah". Tavis is a closet disciple of Louis Farrakhan.

  4. This is not surprising. Tavis has lost any credibility he had many years ago. He is completely owned by the political and social views he holds as Gospel.

He says that he is a Christian but then proceeds to foist this hideous lie upon the back of Chistians in this country. I love the way the woman he was interviewing looked at him like he was crazy!

What a crazy thing to say, and then try to defend.

    ha ha ha!

Maybe we can "blame it on the weed" because he must have been high when he said this.

What absolute stupidity! what a lie and he claims that he could go on and on and only came up with one reference, which was absolutely moronic. It is reported that the murderers in the columbine massacre were asking people if they believed in God before they shot them. They also targeted Christians.

No comments froms Rev. Jackson or Sharpton huh?

EW, he is not the only one following Farrakhan. Go to youtube and you can see how many "churches" he has preached at.

This is why Christianity should never become political or colour based. It doesnt and cannot work as that is not what Christ is about.

  6. Brent Bozell weighed in on this.
We should know that the world's hatred (with its false Christian front men like Tavis) will increase against us.

  7. The more you listen the more unbelievable it sounds. This was very simple minded on his part. Political, liberal garbage. He is weak man, trying to play all sides of the fence.

  8. http://www.pbs.org/ombudsman/

This is the link in which we can make our voices heard. This man must issue an apology, instead he came with some lame political statemant and lied again stating that him and his guest were in agreement. Very subtle, while they agreed that there are Christian extremists, there was no agreement that Christians are blowing people up every day. The guy is a liar and is too full of himself due to his position to admit he was talking foolishness.

  9. Tavis is nuts. Must be.

His whole purpose as he stated in the beginning was to question why people are holding Islam to the light of scruitiny and why in the West that we felt that Islam must be dealt with. He is an Islamic sympathizer and his purpose is to bring both Islam and Christianity to the same level and they are not close to being the same.

To be a radical in Islam is to murder and do jihad. To be a radical Christian, you stand for truth and love more. These are two totally different concepts.

He has yet to produce the list of "Christians" murdering, killing or doing any extremism in America on a daily basis in the name of the Lord. He is trying to move the post to extremism. He didn't say anything about Christian "extremists". His guest brought that up. He was talking about and said, "Christians do this every day" and even said he could go "On" with the listing of examples.

    absolutely!

I would also like him to show an instance where Christians are predisposed to Violence in America. He must be talking about some David Koresh type cults.

    He really is a nutcase!

Embarrassing that a man of his supposed stature and definate influence would talk rubbish like this.

  11. What a lame "clarification" as well as a blantant shameful lie. He has not produced one shred of evidence that Christians "blow up people everyday in America". He should be fired and right speedily, but because the demagogues behind PBS are pro Islam, they are glad he said it.

  13. Paul,

That was excellent! I'm glad you stood in the gap and made this known to them.

Thank god we need advocates for change and to let these people know that we're watching and are not satisfied with what they are trying to do and say.

Now, I hope he will take a lesson and be more careful next time...time will only tell.

Congratulations! And thanks for the update!

  15. Paul,

Hey brother...I haven't heard anything. I've had some pressing issues to attend to so I haven't kept my ear to the ground either.

I'll let you know when I do. Thanks.
