Glorilla & Gospel Music. What Is The Real Issue?

Since the rapper known as "Glorilla" (Gloria Hallelujah  Woods) was delivered the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award for her collab with Kirk Franklin, Maverick City and multiple other  gospel artists at the 2025 BET Awards, there appears to be an outcry from certain gospel artists who have taken the time to cry "foul" to one degree or another. 

While some alleged gospel artists, have no problem with a rapper, who's previous claim to fame was a 2022 viral Tik-Tok rap entitled "F.N.F Let's GO", (whose lyrics are far too vulgar to state here) there are others who claim that there is nothing wrong with Glorilla having the opportunity to "shine" in the gospel music industry and that her appearance is a welcome addition to the gospel music industry.

Because of the apparent success of non-gospel artists in the gospel music space, others, like Deitrick Haddon, above, feel that Gospel Music, as a genre, is dying in its appeal to the masses because of the failure of those within the industry to respect the industry and recognize the work of many within the industry. 

I wonder where was all this "energy" when rapper Snoop Dogg, who has presented his secular rap music with equally or more vulgar language and messages, and also won the same award in 2021 for his song "Blessing Me Again" also in collaboration with respected, top selling gospel artists, such as the late Rance Allen. 

Since Deitrick was silent then (in 2021), is his interest now because of just being fed up with the issue, or is it because Glorilla is a woman, and he didn't want to fall out of favor with his "boyzz"? 

Then, there is "close the doors" Marvin Sapp, recognized as one of the highest charting gospel artists in American history, who in a rather lengthy facebook post, took the time to assert his opinion that the real problem was not that gospel music was dying, but that gospel music has lost its diversity, flavor, and appeal in part because of Christian community's bias and confusion over artists lifestyles, sins, failures and perceptions of "anointing". 

The following is my partial response to Marvin Sapp's posting:

"When we took gospel music, industrialized it, and gave it to secular individuals to promote it, what do you think would happen to it???
Why would the world safeguard and care for something that has been given to us and that we have been entrusted with?"

The truth of the matter is that gospel music, as soon as it was made into an "industry" and rooted in secular appeal, it died. Yet, there were and are presentations, concerts, tours and everything else, but it is as far away from the cross of Christ as left is from right. 

Secondly, far from the opining of Dr. Sapp, I believe that personal character and integrity have everything to do with the success and move forward of gospel music as a whole. To be sure, I am not talking about character flaws and idiosyncrasies. I am talking about sins and the deliberate ability to attempt to straddle the fence singing gospel while living secularly and in sin.

The real issue is salvation and the church's inability to distinguish gifts, talents and abilities from anointing and the yoke breaking power of God. The church is enamored with associations and the ability to run with, be next to, and be in concord with "the world".

James 4:4 ~ Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Now, the truth is that "the world" and "the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus" (Rom. 8:2) are incompatible. Not the mere material existence, which God has given us to enjoy. "The world" is the mode, operation and motive behind life and living.  Association with "the world" leads to compromise and exchange of ideals and values...That push and desire to compromise is the sin nature which is tied to "the world". As believers, we cannot run with it, in part because if we are converted or changed within our hearts. The nature of sin has been broken. We no longer want  sin to be the dominant part of our nature. As believers our nature, hearts, minds, and will should be changed, and reflective of the work Christ has begun within us. As believers we begin to "mortify" the deeds and sins of the flesh.(Col.3:5)

As the late Bishop CH Mason once said, "one can't be a little saved" just as one can't be "a little pregnant". Just as a woman is either "pregnant or not", a person is either "saved or not"! Of course, practically we grow in grace, (2 Pet. 3:18) but our love of sin and desire for evil associations, should be broken. 

Damage To The Kingdom

Then, what of the Kingdom of Christ? Like Gideon's idolatrous father, Joash, many contend that if God didn't want his Kingdom damaged then he would deliver those who represent his name. They would further assert that it is not our job to worry more about the Kingdom than God does himself and that a laissez-faire attitude toward all those who claim to be his servants of representatives is the best action to take.

If it were not for the fact that we are to "earnestly contend for the faith, once delivered unto the Saints" Jude 1:3 I would probably relegate myself to saying nothing or even attempting to shore up the faith of the readers of this blog, because what we are witnessing both in the so called gospel music industry, to the pulpit is a tragic shame. I cannot spend the time speaking on and or against the multiple, repugnant practices, doctrines and manipulative moves I am witnessing and have seen, but have not yet written about...I don't thing that there is enough band-width to reveal and rebuke the contemptuous acts that we are all witnessing. 

For sure, because JESUS prayed and paid for it with HIS blood, the church will survive. However, the exit wound will be painful. Many that started with us, won't make it until and to the end. Many are fainting as we speak.

So, is Gospel music dead? 

CERTAINLY NOT! The God of gospel music yet lives and HE is an should be the reason for the song and HE is certainly the reason I sing. However, that is a far cry from saying that God is pleased with what we see and are witnessing as the gospel music industry. 

I grow tired and absolutely sick of them, who give their gifts directly to the devil, in the name of "business deals" and in order to "promote the message"...It is  TRICK...it will not work. Only God can touch hearts and minds. Yes, I know that there is money to be made, but as the saying goes, "not all money is good money".

Jesus gave us the example...when satan tempted him, which was only done to prove to us that HE was without sin and could not sin, Jesus decried the challenge that satan could give him riches, wealth and influence in the world. In the end, without satan, Jesus stands and says, "behold all power is given unto me" (Mt. 28:18)...Not through or by compromise or anything that satan had to offer...It was GOD who already owned it all that Jesus reveals had and has the ability, control and authority over all things. 

Haddon is too far gone. He can see the issue and not perceive the real problem. Same with Dr. Sapp as far as I can see it. Then there are countless others who only see what the secular world and satan has taught and told them to see in order to judge the issue. Ooh yes, I could name them and nearly present an endless catalogue of misstatements, erroneous statements, errors, and flat out anti-Biblical diatribes flowing from many of our so called "Psalmists" on the issue...but why and to what avail???

What we are sure of is that it is time to REPENT and go back to the foundation and fountain of faith to find it again. When that happens, I am sure we will see a deliverance among the minstrels, (not ministers) that claim to lead us to the throne-room of God. They too, will lose their desire for sexual abuse, alcohol, drugs and other damnable and illicit practices...and most of all, feel the conviction about compromising the gif of God at the alter of satan. When we repent and when we pray there will be a change and folk will be blessed and saved as a result.  

To the church...

Revelation 2:2-5 ~ 2-I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: 3-And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. 4-Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. 5-Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

Donnie's Fall Down/Get Up Continued...

Recently, Donnie McClurkin took to the internet to rebuke internet bloggers who "expose" the sins of some of the more popular gospel entertainers, artists and ministers. 

While I will not go into what led to the need for Donnie to take to the internet to rebuke folk on the internet for rebuking folk on the internet, all the while contending that the godly way to speak up on issues would be to "go to" the individual (as opposed to talking about it on the internet) I want to look at the theology behind his statements rather than the personalities he was attempting to defend aka: his fellow gospel entertainment artists. Continuation Of Fall Down/ Get Up Theology

In his retort, Donnie invoked Micah 7:8, which certainly caught my attention (as outside of scripture I could really care less what any of these folk who use the gospel to make a living while presenting shoddy lifestyles do [Donnie excluded as I believe he lives saved])...What I thought was interesting, was that he chose to invoke a part of scripture in which the people (Israel) have gone into sin, been rebuked and judged by God for their sin, and are awaiting their deliverance and ultimate vindication by God for their circumstance. We all know this from basic OT bible study as the "sin cycle". So it is very familiar to many of us. 

What most people do not realize however, is that Donnie appears to build on his "fall into sin/get back up" motif popularized by a former controversial hit "We Fall Down". Donnie uses the scripture in Micah to suggest that a "fall" is tantamount to sin similar to what he did with the song "We Fall Down".

My Response

In response to what I believe was Donnie's misapplication and abuse of scripture, I wrote the following on my Facebook site and our In Defense Of The Faith forum:

Donnie McClurkin absolutely BUTCHERED Micah 7:8 which says this:

"Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me."

Now, according to his suggested interpretation the word "fall" would include falling into sin and shame or the condition of sin. 

Now the context links "sit in darkness" to "fall"...this begs the question...if this is referring to a condition of SIN, then how is it that when we are in this condition that "the Lord" is a "light" unto us? 

Now one can go through some fanciful twists to try to convince us that God is a light or abiding presence even in sin, and it is he that brings us out etc...but look further at the context of the chapter.

Micah was not talking about an individual condition of sin, but about turmoil or national upheaval as a result of sin, in which people and families were suffering due to circumstance and resultant judgement or correction from the Lord, NOT due to ongoing immoral or sinful behavior.

V.9 says, "I will bear the indignation of the LORD, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, and I shall behold his righteousness"

Some conclude that because this says "I have sinned" proves that this was about the condition of sin. 

Well the fact is this, as 1 John 1:8 says if we say that "we have no sin" or that the condition of sin has not touched, effected or even controlled our lives, or is not a struggle today, we deceive ourselves greatly...

What Micah acknowledges is the job that sin has done on us (aka Israel) to cause us to suffer as a people, and that we have sinned as a whole, in need of a savior (which points to JESUS our Savior in the text) what is not alluded to is that we have fallen into or regressed into sin as a lifestyle or have been overwhelmed by sinful behavior aka: fallen into sin. 

Donnie builds upon his misapplied "fall down, get back up" narrative in which he took a song in which the message was about a servant falling down before God on behalf of and for strength to continue to serve the people and do the mission of Christ. In Donnie's application it was about saved folk consistently sinning (fall down) and repenting (get back up) to do the "work of the Lord".

In short, Donnie does the Saint, gospel singers, the church and the gospel itself a great disservice and displays why one cannot trust feelings, emotions, crowds or personalities for the direction or truth of God's word and must seek sound discretion and council for light and guidance. 

I only hope that this new generation is not deceived by this seeming continued diet of false gospel interpretives as entertainers seek to cover or minimize their sins that they so abundantly embrace in the name of "nobody's perfect".

Now, can we acknowledge that the scripture was referring to people (Israel) who had egregiously sinned and was suffering as a result of their sin? YES

Can we say that any of this scripture suggests that the believer or people of God could be content to practice sin, and still yet claim the "light of God" (aka: Christ) NO.

In fact to do so would be sacrilege and certainly ungodly and unholy before the Lord. 

The part that I find particularly problematic is Donnie's association of this scripture, which is probably one of the most upbeat parts of Micah, to the condition of the modern "minstrel" who has not only failed, but openly and publicly, cheated, been in homosexual chat-rooms, showed their private parts on the internet, cussed and otherwise played a harlot, and even reverted back to ungodliness in both lifestyle and presentation, all the while yet claiming to be a "servant of God". 

Yes, we ALL have faults...and my picture is in the dictionary under the word, HOWEVER, those of us who are SAVED are not content in simply reverting in and out of sin when it is convenient and demanding others to "accept me anyhow"...No that is manipulation, not scripture. 

A Final Word & Pushback: 

"Pastor, the bible says love COVERETH the multitude of sins and faults" (1 Pet. 4:8 from Prov. 10:12)...

YES, it does say that. However, it does not suggest that believers embrace an effort to encourage the saints to bypass sin or the judgement of sin as wrong. It does not encourage believers to overlook the fact that sin is ungodly and is still something that breaks fellowship and union with Christ. 

The scripture is clear...NOONE can "cover" sins but God. It is also clear that those of us who do "cover sins" are condemned for it:

Prov. 28:13 ~ He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

Now, one may say that Proverbs is referring to "others" covering the sins of individuals (which Donnie I suppose would be suggesting by refusing to even accept that his colleagues are doing evil and will be judged) but the scripture is clear...to sin and simply walk on with cursory repentance is also ungodly and condemned. 

Now, PLEASE, don't give us this, "go to such a one and restore them in the spirit of meekness"...OK, how possible is it for us "ordinary folk" to go to these stars and moguls? They hide their phone numbers, make themselves inaccessible unless they are making money off of us, and REFUSE to listen to anyone rank and file who may have a word from the Lord for them...ie: they SELECTIVELY hear and don't care to listen to us!

The very nature of their "entertainment status" makes these people off limits and they only listen to their colleagues who sometimes are also ungodly. So unless it is for bloggers, youtubers and others, many of these folk would not hear, and most of the time they claim they don't listen to or read anything on the internet (or at least nothing that criticizes or examines them). So how are they reached? 

THIS is going to them and I hope they can understand that. While many of us could be wrong about our assessments and ultimately our opinions, we all can't be wrong. Everybody ain't stupid neither is everyone deceived into believing that the sins that many of them present and want us to accept are just "seasons in life" that they experience. 

No, these men and women, regardless of how they sing, entertain and or act, and no matter how much money they have, need to be SAVED like everyone else, to the point where they leave and come out of the world too. Anything less simply expands hell and fellowship with the original, now doomed heavenly crooner...the artist and angel formerly known as lucifer, now satan destined for the Lake Of Fire himself!

Hip Hop, Idolatry & The Church Pt. 26 ~ Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. & Rastafarianism 101

Many of us have heard of the hip-hop rapper formerly known as Snoop Dogg, currently known as Snoop Lion, originally born as Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. It seems that Calvin is fast becoming a gospel music artist getting ready to put out a gospel project along with some of the top names in the gospel music industry. 

Quite naturally the questions and criticism have swirled all over the internet especially among the Black community as to what's happening. 

I'll attempt to address a few of the more nuanced questions and address some issues hopefully from a biblical perspective in this article. 

Can Snoop really be a Christian? Secondly, are Christians validating sin by headlining with him?

Well, there are a host of views regarding Calvin and his association with gospel music icons.

We have traditionalists that say, 

• "there is no way this man is saved." 

We have liberals, who say,

• "everybody should praise God as everyone will praise him in the end and Snoop is entitled to his praise just like anyone else." 

Then we have moderates that say,

• "I'm happy IF he's saved, but is he really saved? And if so, when did he get saved?"

Then we have extremists that say, 

• "the gospel artists aren't saved anyway so what difference does it make?" 

I must confess, I am in the l"moderate", camp on this issue. To claim that the gospel artists aren't saved is a little too steep for me. I personally know some that are. Notwithstanding, I can certainly question many of the motives and condemn some of the presentations rendered purporting to be "gospel". But, I have already placed my thoughts on this blog clearly regarding those issues HERE...Let's deal with Calvin and not them for a minute.

The Current Story Of Calvin:

Calvin is a husband, father, and a music icon. He is also a coach and a Black man in America with a beautiful family As one with all of those things myself, (except for the music icon part and the money) I understand Calvin. And although he is from the gang/street/hip-hop generation of which I never felt the need to be a part of, I have nothing against him. 

So far as him turning to gospel, personally, I think it would be good for him and all men if they would come to Christ, however, I know that all men won't. If Calvin does or if he has, that would be good for him and his family. No doubt. I can only pray and root for his conversion if he is not converted, and maybe be an example that he would want to follow on a serious journey to know Jesus.

Nothing but love for Calvin, and although we will examine his theology, I think it's in order for us to look at the church before going too much further...

The Church's Desire For Association

However, what is not so good for the church, is simply parading people in front of it, no matter who they are, as if they are saved, without any evidence of a conversion experience. The church seems to do this with any "star" or secularly popular person that places the name of Jesus on their lips. They seem to get carried away with the idea that famous men and women can accept Christ. But none of that means anything if repentance doesn't precede them. Whether famous or not, without repentance and turning from sin and a sinful lifestyle and expressing saving faith in Jesus, they are still lost in their sins, and that is an issue.

The sentiment regarding how we should be careful in our display and associations and promotion of who is saved, is similar to sentiments of Nathan Jones of Premiere.Christianity.com, as he examined the same issue pertaining to Calvin and other secular artists recently gone gospel. He stated this in an article:

"Immediately claiming them as a Christian and making them a role model to many usually works out badly. They never asked to be paraded as examples of upright Christian morality. But nor should we dismiss their faith out-of-hand because they still swear and smoke weed. We are all fallen and in a process of sanctification to fight our former sinful nature." ~ Nathan Jones "Is Snoop Dogg's new Christian faith for real?" Premiere Christianity

Although the theological point is debateable, I certainly agree with the essence of his statement. These folk did not ask to be gospel role models. It seems that many simply make them icons because of their former lives, fame and popularity.

What makes it worse, is that I don't know of any pastor or church leader that wouldn't be thrilled to have Calvin come to the church and attend a Sunday service. No matter how critical the critics are, and they can be cold on the internet,  if Calvin showed up at their church, he could nearly get away with everything that he wanted in the name of hospitality and people falling all over themselves. And don't even mention taking out the checkbook and writing a check....OMG!!! (As the young people say)

Be clear, my opinion is not to say how or why Calvin can't be saved or to even criticize him for making a gospel album. If God can save ME, he can save ANYBODY!!!! My examination is to ask why the church, especially fellow gospel artists and singers, are so enamored with the prospects of collaborating with nearly anyone who "claims" to be a Christian and or saved, and why we as a church like to parade folks who barely know Jesus , if they do, bringing them before the church as if they are some sort of prize? Is it really because they want to spread the :influence" of Christ or is it because they love the world so much, that they must hold onto something, even a piece of anything?

And then, let me take a dig here, some of the critics breathing fire on Calvin, yet themselves claiming to be a Christian, live worse than Calvin did at the height of his "Doggy Style Love" days!!! So some of the criticism of him is way over the top but some of what we have allowed through our favorite ministry leaders and singers is at least equally as egregious and yet many of us turn on the TV to see them service after service and keep them in business doing their dastardly deeds with our money.  

I'm certainly not giving Calvin a pass as you will see, but we need to examine ourselves as well because I believe that it has been the church that has helped create and seal the fate of the "Calvins" both in and out of the church. And that is not a good testimony on our behalf. 

With that said, let's examine a few issues:

Why Gospel From The Dogg?

Calvin was asked that same question. Here is his answer: 

"It's always been on my heart. I just never got around to it because I always be doing 'gangsta' business or doing this or doing that," he said during an interview with Beats 1 Radio. "I just felt like it's been on my heart too long. I need to do it now."

So the answer is clear as to why Calvin is doing a gospel CD. It seems that he always wanted to do one. We can assume that the desire to do this was even during his Dogg and Lion days. So Calvin's desire to do a gospel CD does not seem to be a product of a conversion experience or out of a new found dedication to Christ. It appears to be a long running desire to do something different. 

Nothing wrong with that...some do some don't!

Is Calvin Saved?

The Late Haile Selassie

NO. As far as I can tell, Calvin has adopted Rastafarianism as opposed to Christianity. In Rastafarianism, one would hold allegiance to Haile Selassie, the former Ethiopian King, (supposedly a direct descendant of David) as the messiah and reincarnate Christ, and hail him as "The Lion Of Judah" or the object of all praise, worship and affection. 

Rastas would believe in Jesus as much as they would contend that Haile Selassie is Jesus himself. Therefore to praise Jesus, in their mind, is to praise Haile Selassie. This is evidenced by the title "Lion" that Calvin adopted into his name.

Calvin owes Rastafarianism for his life changes and sepaks up on what the changes have done for him. As recorded by The Guardian UK Online: 

"He (Calvin) talks about the other ways Rastafarianism has changed him. "I used to answer hate with hate. Like if you hate me, I hate you more. But now I answer hate with love." 

What about your attitude to women? Was there hate in the lyrics of early songs, the bitches and the hos? "Yeah, because I was making music for me, speaking from my perspective. I was taught that a bitch is a ho and a ho was a bitch, so my music represented that, until I got to the point where I wanted to show love and appreciation for the woman."

Calvin, aka: Snoop Lion, displayed his new found faith and a claim that he was the "reincarnation of Bob Marley". Bob Marley was claimed to be one of the greatest evangelists of Rastafarianism using his musical talents to spread the word and praise of Halie Selassie. This is what the "Lion" told the Guardian UK:

"It's not hard to guess what upset many Rastafarians. The title Reincarnated refers to Snoop's statement that he is the reincarnation of Bob Marley. Does he really believe that? He looks me in the eyes and raps. 

"'Bob Marley reincarnated, pupils dilated, emancipated, concentrated, debated, rated many times, you defy how I made it? Huh?' It is me." 

I don't know it then, but he's quoting It Blows My Mind, a song he wrote in 2007."

Since 2007 Calvin has placed this thought that he was a reincarnated Bob Marley in the air. So I believe that it should be fairly clear, that Calvin is not necessarily valuing or spelling out a conversion experience to the Jesus of the bible as much as he is hailing his allegiance to Halie Selassie, the Rastafarian lord and king. 

Now, in a land of freedom, Calvin has the right to worship whom he pleases. However, we have the right to examine his confession of faith and make a clear distinction between it and the biblical Christ that we serve. 

Nothing New...Same Old Rastafarian Story

This is similar to if not exactly like Lauryn Hill. She is another Rastafarian convert that I have documented on this blog HERE and on two podcasts and radio broadcasts both HERE and HERE.  

Lauryn too was singing songs and collaborating with traditional popular Black gospel artists. They were singing odes that the church thought was to Jesus and about Jesus, but Lauren was actually expressing her praise to Haile Selassie. 

The Rastas do not believe in commitments, contracts or paying taxes so it seems. Lauryn Hill, like some others, did a stint in jail due to tax evasion. Calvin has already said that his wife simply has to understand him and his job and take the good and the bad that comes along with it. It was clear that this was "street man code" for, "don't say nothing 'bout me having sex with these ho's, otherwise we got issues" What was a divorce in 2004, eventually led to a renewal in 2008 in the Broadus marriage. 

What Of The Thirsty Gospel Artists?

YES, some of then are THIRSTY and you can tell. It's the same one's who live on the edge of salvation and the world that continue to embrace the world trying to make the world acceptable within the church. However, over the years I believe my view on this has evolved somewhat. I want to point this out...

Only God can cast out the devil...If Calvin has a devil, who should he be around? Certainly the Saints or those with the power of God to cast the devil out and bring him to salvation! If Calvin is in error, he should be around the Saints that have the truth to correct error.  

HOWEVER...When the Saints are powerless or can't cast the devil out, and in return only seek fame, popularity, and validation of the world, HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM!!!

That is the question in my opinion. Is the contract of the gospel artist so great that the faith of gospel artists mean nothing? I have asked that question in The Sale Of The Psalmist article as well, and don't intend to retrace over old ground, but we need to examine some issues to see where and who our allegiance is to as people of God, musicians and gospel artists. We continue to do and act more and more like the world and less and less like the bible. But the question still remains:

WHO IS ON THE LORD'S SIDE???

Calvin, keep hanging around. I hope that one day, a REAL Saint will grab you and cast out that ganga smokin; Halie Selassie loving demon, that you embrace, 'cause it's GOT to go in order for me to purchase a CD!!! For Sheezy on that one!!!!

Hip-Hop, Idolatry & The Church Pt. 23 ~ The G. Craig Lewis Gospel

I haven't mentioned Elder Lewis in quite some time and they say that even a broke clock is right twice a day-LOL!!! Not saying that he is a "broke clock" but ANYWAY, in this interview our dear friend G. Craig Lewis tackles the questions asked by Gospel Truth Magazine regarding the "Gospel music industry" and the problems that he knows that exist as gospel artists have sold themselves into silence against the culture. On THIS issue, I believe brother is certainly on point and I appreciate his work in that area of ministry.

Now he was 100% CORRECT speaking about not allowing homosexuals to serve in ministry, but around 21:57 he says that homosexuals shouldn't even be allowed in the church...I think he should go back to the drawing-board on that one...As he says he asks others, "Where's that at in the bible?" This is where the "broke clock" comes in. I don't believe you'll find that one or anything that says, block the door of the church for any sinner, that hadn't already been condemned and judged by God. Howbeit, (and I render this in hope that I am correct about his intention) I BELIEVE he was referring to the acceptance and perpetuation of homosexual behavior as being the problem...although that's not what he stated. He stated, they shouldn't be in the church period. So I don't know...All I know is Jesus said this: 

Lk. 19:10 ~ For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

The CHURCH is the only hope for all sinners. If we have POWER, they should be able to come and be delivered and set free. That's the church and what it's about, whether we're comfortable or uncomfortable with what we have to do to not allow their sin to be embraced by others. We can put boundaries around any ungodly activity in church, including the ungodly activity of homosexuality but let ALL sinners come to Jesus and HIS church! Even if they have to sit until they are set free.... 

Anyway, except for that little misstep, I think there are some good questions that can be raised by his commentary.

One thing is for certain. as we have already established...the gospel minister is in trouble...we have seen the meltdown and breakdown...In my Hip-hop Idolatry & The Church Series #9,  I have taken a look into the world of music cross-overs. As noted in the post over the years we have seen artists that have gone from gospel to secular music and from secular to gospel music and such the like. As I noted then, it is a tragedy and it still is a tragedy. 

Secularism: When The World Looks Good & Considerations Of God Become Small

The term secularism can be defined in the following manner:

1. Religious skepticism or indifference.
2. The view that religious considerations should be excluded from civil affairs or public education

Our friends at Real Zone allowed a pastor to define secularism highlighting it's spiritual implications as follows:

“Secularism is a movement that opposes God and everything that is associated with God. Secularism promotes independence from God. It removes God from people’s thoughts, the educational system and from programs and policies. It is, therefore, wrong for anybody to criticize or label as secular, an artist that sings a song which is not blasphemous of God or his commandments. “

Secularism is more in line with a culture or a world view. A way of doing things that does not allow the influence of God or Biblical based moral decisions to come into play. The artist or individual is pursuing a "career" using the instruments that belong to God with no consideration for HIM and when there is consideration it is usually a reinterpretation of material facts to suit. 

The problem is further summed up like this...folk that only have a gift and a place because of God, fail to subject and submit that gift to God in favor of money, fame and worldly accolade and career advancement. They have cheapened themselves by using their gifts inappropriately and even against God to favor, honor and support an anti-Christ industry of secularism displayed through music and various forms of entertainment. 

Evil Communication Corrupts Good Manners (1 Cor. 15:33)

I mean look at it...we have gospel artists and even leaders and administrators of organizational music departments such as pastor Kim Burrell, Assistant International Music Director in the Church Of God In Christ, who has not only said that she wants to "sing with Prince", because she feels that he is "anointed"(what a JOKE!) but has also made career decisions and moves in union with homosexuals such as Krishnar Lewis (Lewis Agency) to not only produce music, and videos, but also the show "Whatever It Takes" The title is all in it as Kim says:

"I'll do 'whatever it takes' to sustain the momentum of my success, as long as I have my dream team" ~ video promo

Unfortunately, Kirshnar now has stage 4 rectal cancer that has metastasized from what has been said in the video, so it is a wonder how long this relationship will continue or go on. We do pray from Krishnar's salvation. In short there will be at least 2 persons whom pastor Burrell will have been around that is in serious need of a move of God, but yet she seems focused on the "momentum" of her "success" as she does not apparently want that hindered in any way and will do anything to keep it going.

Where Are We Going Wrong In The Gospel Music Industry?

Recently, Pastor Donnie McClurkin hosted a discussion with Pastors Andre Crouch (Sandra Crouch too), Pastor Marvin Sapp, and Pastor Kim Burrell on TBN. Note that the question was pretty simple and straight forward:

"Where are we going wrong in the (Gospel) music industry?"


Aside from the laughter the question generated among the audience and the refusal of the Pastors to initiate the conversation, and Sandra saying that she doesn't like to talk about what's going wrong...


Donnie said it's about "honoring God" and "not imitating"...OK, does that mean producing videos wearing pink lipstick as men, or producing so called gospel videos in lingerie? 


Could you guys be a little more specific please? The church and the world would like to know. Was the question ever answered?

Then there's former gay, Donnie McClurkin and I stand corrected, this is T.J. Holmes another CNN anchor. I don't think he's gay however.

Question yet stands, what is this...a Gay festival?

 Then who is it that fell from heaven?

"A power from heaven that I can't explain, fell from heaven like a shower".  

By the way the background of this video matches the Gay Pride Flag colors that was designed by Gilbert Barker. Is Kirk simply sending a message that Gays have no reason to be discouraged, or is he sending a message of gay inclusion?

Well at least that's what PASTOR Kim Burrell did, and does. Yes, I said PASTOR. We all know that even pastors wear night clothes and have sexy apparel...but when you joined your church, did you expect to see your pastor in his/her DRAWS and unmentionables, displaying themselves in a sexually provocative manner on video? Well that is exactly what happened in one particular Church Of God In Christ and what is represented among the top leadership of praise and worship presenters in the Church Of God In Christ and we see it. We know what we're looking at and it is a MESS! I appreciate the attention that GCMWatch has brought to the issue.

BMI...A Tribute To ~ Commissioned

Now, anyone that knows me knows that I am all things Commissioned. Not simply because of personalities, but because every one of the group members that I know (past and present) are sincerely dedicated to Christ and the building of Christ's Kingdom. In other words, they are saved folk, and not just playing the part and making money. So when my friend Karl Reid posted a part of BMI's January 2011 tribute to Commissioned as sung by the Clark Sisters, I was more than happy to add it to the blog. As a bonus I added The Men Of Standard tribute to Commissioned also. This is yet another fantastic song that blessed my life. These songs were written at a time when Gospel music actually had lyrics that let you know they were singing gospel...isn't that a novel idea??? BTW: I'm rootin' for another tour with all NEW songs this time...in other words a new Commissioned project with all the original and current group members. I think we would be well served to go back to real gospel music with Christ centered lyrics.  

(Special note: I hope that the Clark Sisters and other gospel singers will continue to tribute gospel folk instead of secular folk such as Frankie Beverly...Just a thought!)

"I wanna record with Prince."

So says Assistant International Music Director of the Church Of God In Christ Inc., or more correctly the Vice President of the International Music Dept.,  Kim Burrell. The following information is from a 2009 interview with E.J. Gaines of  Gospelpundit.com . In light of the recent post on gospel crossovers in Pt. 9 of this series, I thought it interesting to delve a little more deep into the subject and see what is attracting so many of today's gospel singers into relationships secular and worldly artists and how they are reconciling their actions.

I have pasted the 2 parts of that interview that we are concerned with in this writing. Kim's responses are in bold:

Pt. 1: Kim Burrell On Prince

EJ: Nice. Couple more questions… I’ve asked several people who they’d most like to record with and many of them have said either Stevie Wonder or Kim Burrell. Now, you’ve already recorded with Stevie Wonder and you are Kim Burrell– so how do YOU answer that question?

KB: Prince.

EJ: PRINCE?! I was not expecting that.

KB: I wanna record with Prince. There’s still a sound… I feel the presence of God. There’s a sound to come out of Prince through submission to the Holy Spirit. Not just to God, because he has a regard for Jehovah, for God.

But I’m talking about a SOUND to come out of Prince. I feel like every time I say it, God is shooting it to him. Not for the benefit of Burrell to do a recording. We can do it and keep it in the house as far as I’m concerned. I just wanna record with the man and sit with him because God has invested something in Prince that NOBODY in the world has.

And because of that, he has a worship inside of him that is second to none. There is an album that he did within the last 5 or 6 years, and one of the songs… honey, when I tell you there is a sound on there that came very close to the Holy Spirit of God… and I know he’s been tapping in on that because of his encounters with God.

EJ: I believe that.

KB: But there is still something that is to come out of him that I want to experience, and I’d love to do a recording with him because I want to experience that moment. I want the Spirit of God to flow through him to write and say some things to God that can change some people’s lives, and change how people worship.


I believe that Prince has an element inside of him that can change the way worship is heard.

EJ: Hmmmm. I pray that it happens.

KB: I do, too.

Now, this is really beyond me...She follows the same line of reasoning that Juanita II followed when she claimed that Prince and DMX were "before their time" and even visionary in their music. I can't for the life of me figure out how Prince, has "a worship inside of him that is second to none," I mean Prince or the artist formerly know as Prince, whichever one we are talking about, has something that "will change the way worship is heard"????

The Era And Error Of The Cross-Overs

In modern society music has become such a powerful industry, that even those who know that they are being destroyed by it, yield themselves to it as if it has some sort of controlling power. We would have to admit that music does seem to help set the pace for trends and all kinds of communication and association in the modern world. Within the industry, the fame and popularity along with the mass dollars and accolades can be overwhelming for those who are unprepared yet alone for those who are prepared. Artists often set aside personal commitments, compromising values and complete value systems in pursuit of the fame that the industry has to offer.

From Secular Music To Gospel Music

There has always been those who have left the church to sing and pursue secular music. In fact the foundation of modern secular music is arguably the church itself. What many don't know is that at it's early inception, modern gospel music was the product of of the secular music's desire to "cross-over" into the gospel music arena. Thomas A Dorsey (1899-1993) who was a secular blues musician, stated the following regarding his expansion of musical style into the church:

"When I realized how hard some folks were fighting the gospel idea, I was determined to carry the banner."..."I borrowed five dollars and sent out 500 copies of my song, 'If You See My Savior,' to churches throughout the country.... It was three years before I got a single order. I felt like going back to the blues." ~ Score Magazine "The Father of Gospel Music" 1994  

He indicates the "gospel idea" to display the idea of gospel music being driven by what was then deemed as secular music, rhythms and beats.


From Gospel Music To Secular Music
Known as the original cross over singer, Sam Cooke (January 22, 1931 – December 11, 1964) received his training at the age of 10 while a part of the gospel Soul Stirrers, led by Rebert H. Harris. After leaving the group for fame, popularity and money Sam would go on to an astounding career but die under very suspicious circumstances at at the age of 33.

Others who would cross-over in pursuit of the same things are names such as Ashford and Simpson who's gospel name was The Followers, Chuck Jackson of the gospel group Raspberry Singers, Wilson Pickett  from the Violinares, Johnny Taylor of The Highway QCs and Bobby Womack of The Womack Singers who signed with SAR Records -[Sam Cook] and were renamed the Valentinos.

Many of us can remember that it was Aretha Franklin "Soul Sister #1" who forged her career out of the Baptist church of her father Rev. C.L. Franklin. We also know that it was Donnie Hathaway (1945-1979) whose song "This Christmas" written in 1970 that set the standard for Christmas songs all over America during the holiday season. Unfortunately, this former church musician reportedly committed suicide in 1979 over his love and passion for a married woman and co-singer, Roberta Flack. According to the most accurate story, Hathaway threw himself out of the window in front of Flack to demonstrate his love. Not only was this stupid, it was certainly demonically inspired.

The Modern & Recent Resurgence Of Cross-Over

In this segment we wanted to look back at not only the historic trend of how gospel music and musicians have mixed themselves with the world and ultimately the devil, but also look at the impact that a few personalities have had on the modern secular and gospel music industries and ask the question, should gospel even be an industry?

As noted, there have been individuals who have left the gospel to pursue careers within the hip-hop music industry and the impact has certainly been made. however it would seem that the greatest impact upon the culture has come at the hands and perverted gifts of those who once claimed to be children of God.

From Evangelism To Sexual Perversion

In what seems like ancient history for many individuals now in their early to mid 30's, the group called Jodeci offered an appeal that was almost hypnotic to their fans. Combining the rifts and crooning of the streets with a gospel and heart felt tone of soul, the multi-platinum selling Jodeci swept many young people off their feet and ushered in a new era of R & B street and hip-hop combination music. This era (late 80's and early 90's) was known as the "New Jack Swing" era of street music and gave rise to many crossover artists seeking to expand their audience.

The first part of the quartet consisted of Cedric Hailey (K-Ci), 9/2/1969; Joel Hailey (JoJo) 6/10/1971; both brothers born in Charlotte, North Carolina; parents were gospel singers; that formed a group called Little Cedric and The Hailey Singers. Part 2 consisted of Dalvin DeGrate 7/23/1971 and Donald (DeVante Swing) DeGrate, Jr. 9/24/1969 were born in Hampton, VA. Their parents were Donald DeGrate, Sr. and Mary DeGrate and formed the group The DeGrate Delegation who made regular tours throught the country and especially the South. The Degrate Delegation had one of the first gospel music tracks to ever hit Billboard's top 10 dance charts. The song was "I Wanna Be Ready". Jodeci was discovered by rapper Heavy D and signed by Uptown records President, Andre Harrell.

The Idolatrous Celebration Of "Steve"

In the ongoing saga of the Celebration Of Gospel, offered by BET, a plethora of talents were on display. Some of those talents included secular singers such as Fantasia and Kelly Price, who pretended to be saved for a few minutes, homosexual choir directors who pretended that their anti-biblical practices really didn't matter, and comedians that admit that the church can't turn its back too quickly because certain cuss words may simply fly out of their mouths under the right circumstance...

Then, in what was the ultimate in "star worship", Gospel singers and the gospel industry itself as represented gave a special tribute to the guest host, Steve Harvey, whose claim to gospel fame is hosting the show for 10 years and writing a book 'Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man' in which he claims it's good for a young lady to not rush into sexual activity, by waiting at least 90 days (establishing a 90 day rule) before engaging premarital sex. In other words, the message is have sex if you want to, only find out of this is a person that you really want to have it with after some time. From a secular teacher this is par for the course however there's more that the church should be concerned about.

Obeisance Of The Gospel Industry

As we watched gospel industry elites such as Donnie McClurkin, and Marvin Sapp commend Steve Harvey for the "progress" that he's making both spiritually and materially one couldn't help but be reminded of who these singers were really honoring. To be clear, although Steve "thinks" he's a Christian (I suppose by osmosis) because he has done many good things and doesn't approach things like he used to, I am yet left asking the questions,

1-When did Steve Harvey repent of his sins?  and

2- When did Steve Harvey forsake his sins and follow Jesus?
